Athleisure done properly: wearing activewear every day
Athleisure is activewear worn as normal clothing. It works when the pieces are chosen for the street first and the workout second — not the other way around.
Pieces that leave the gym well
- Matte high-rise leggings, straight or flared.
- A structured top or bodysuit under an open shirt or blazer.
- An oversized hoodie in a neutral tone.
- A clean zip-up or track jacket without loud branding.
- Wide sweatpants with a defined waist.
Three rules that make it look intentional
- One sporty piece per outfit, at most two.
- Balance the volume: tight bottom with oversized top, or the reverse.
- Keep the palette narrow — two or three tones, matte fabrics.
Simple formulas
- Flared leggings + fitted top + long coat + trainers.
- Bike shorts + oversized hoodie + chunky sneakers.
- Track jacket + straight trousers + minimal jewellery.
- Matching set + leather or denim jacket for evening.
Where the look breaks
Worn-out training pieces, pilled fabric and loud logos are what make athleisure read as unfinished. Keep a couple of pieces reserved for going out rather than putting every session through them.
The HAY approach
We design pieces to work in both directions from the start: fabric and fit that hold up in training, cut and colour that work on the street. That is the point of an active lifestyle wardrobe — you should not have to change to live your day.

Questions on this topic
Are workout leggings fine for yoga?
If they are soft, opaque and have four-way stretch — yes. Heavily compressive pairs designed for lifting usually feel restrictive in long holds.
Tight or loose clothing for yoga?
Fitted on the bottom so the teacher can see alignment and the fabric does not fall over your face in inversions; the top can be looser if it stays put.
Does HAY sell accessories yet?
The showroom is still in development. Accessories for training and active days are part of the planned range, and the launch is announced on Instagram @hay.sport first.
