Clothing for yoga

In yoga the body moves through every plane, so clothing is judged in inversions, not in the mirror. Softness, stretch and coverage matter more than compression.

What to look for

  • Four-way stretch so the fabric follows the body in every direction.
  • A soft, brushed hand feel — you spend time on the floor.
  • Minimal seams and a wide waistband that does not dig in when folding forward.
  • A top that stays down in downward dog and up in inversions.

Fit over size

Yoga pieces should feel like a second skin without squeezing. If a waistband leaves marks after a 60-minute class, the compression is too high for this format — save that pair for strength work.

From studio to street

Matte finishes, straight or flared legs and simple tops read as normal clothes outside the studio — the athleisure logic HAY is built on.

Questions on this topic

Are workout leggings fine for yoga?

If they are soft, opaque and have four-way stretch — yes. Heavily compressive pairs designed for lifting usually feel restrictive in long holds.

Tight or loose clothing for yoga?

Fitted on the bottom so the teacher can see alignment and the fabric does not fall over your face in inversions; the top can be looser if it stays put.
