Clothing for running
Running punishes bad clothing faster than any other format: one wrong seam and you feel it for five kilometres. This is the kit that keeps a run about the run.
Fabric first
Cotton holds sweat and gets heavy. Look for light polyester or nylon blends that move moisture and dry fast, with as few seams as possible in the underarm and inner-thigh zones.
Layering by temperature
- Warm: shorts or short tights and a light top.
- Mild: full-length tights and a long sleeve.
- Cold: add a windproof layer; the base layer stays thin, not thick.
Details that decide the run
- A pocket that holds a phone without bouncing.
- A waistband that does not need adjusting mid-run.
- Reflective details for early mornings and evenings.

Questions on this topic
Leggings or shorts for running?
Below roughly 12°C full-length tights are more comfortable; above that shorts or short tights keep you cooler. The deciding factor is chafing, so choose the option with fewer inner-thigh seams.
Do I need special clothes to start running?
No. Start with anything non-cotton that fits well, then upgrade the two pieces you notice most: tights and the top.
