Beginner running kit: what to actually buy first

Most people either buy nothing and quit after two chafed runs, or buy everything and still get it wrong. Here is the short list that covers the first months.

1. Shoes come first

This is the only place where spending more genuinely changes the experience. Choose a neutral cushioned trainer, go half a size up from your street size, and try them at the end of the day when your feet are slightly swollen.

2. A sports bra that matches the impact

Running is high-impact, so a light yoga bra is not enough. Look for encapsulation or a combined design, wide straps and a band that stays in place when you jump on the spot.

3. Tights or shorts, not cotton

Synthetic tights or shorts move sweat away and dry between runs. Cotton stays wet, gets heavy and is the main cause of chafing on longer distances.

4. Layers for cold weather

  • Base layer: thin, fast-drying, close to the skin.
  • Mid layer: long sleeve or light fleece for below ~5°C.
  • Shell: wind and water resistant, packable.
  • Dress for the temperature plus about 10 degrees — you warm up within a kilometre.

5. Small things that save runs

  • Technical socks — the cheapest blister insurance there is.
  • Anti-chafe balm for the first long runs.
  • A cap or headband for sun and rain.
  • A pocket that actually holds a phone without bouncing.

Build the habit before the wardrobe

Three short runs a week beat one perfect outfit. Add pieces as distance grows, not before.

Questions on this topic

Leggings or shorts for running?

Below roughly 12°C full-length tights are more comfortable; above that shorts or short tights keep you cooler. The deciding factor is chafing, so choose the option with fewer inner-thigh seams.

Do I need special clothes to start running?

No. Start with anything non-cotton that fits well, then upgrade the two pieces you notice most: tights and the top.

Does HAY sell accessories yet?

The showroom is still in development. Accessories for training and active days are part of the planned range, and the launch is announced on Instagram @hay.sport first.
